had received a telegram in cypher from the Governor of
Macao to the effect that, on the night of the 26th.inst.
the Portuguese police had arrested 3 men suspected of
having taken part in the raid on Cheung Chau, and had
seized the junk employed in the raid.Others of her
occupants escaped by water to Chinese territory. Jewellery
suspected of having been stolen at Cheung Chau had also
beon soized. Another suspect was given into custody in
acao by a Hongkong detective. I gather that the arrests
were made in the upper harbour of lacao. The Macao police
recovered 4 revolvers buried in the sand on the beach.
The widow of a leader killed in the attack, together with
another pirate, by the rifle fire of his own party, indicated
the place. the was dissatisfied with the compensation
given her for the loss of her husband.
7. Regarding the attack upon Choung Chau police
station, it appears that, at about 10 pm. on the night of
tue 19th.inst.a gang of not less than 40 men armed with
revolvers, rifles sad, judging from clips and cartridges
left behind, automatic Hauser pistols, landed on the bea ch
on the south side of Cheung Chau(Dumbell Island)on a
narrow neck of land, on the north side of which lies
the prosperous fishing village of Cheung Chau. The village
consists of one principal street in which is situated
the Police Station, the front of which abuts on the fore-
-chore. The station is an old building converted from a
Chinese house by the Chinese Maritime Customs Staff, who
formerly occupied it. It affords no means of defence.
There were stationed at the place 1 European Sergeant
(an ex-arine and a fan of good character),4 Indian
Constables and 4 Chinese boatmen who man the boat for
harbour work in boarding junks, etc.:there was also
present a ühinese shroff for the purpose of collecting
